Venado Caves

Located just 10 miles from the Hotel there is marvelous place to visit.

History

Rumors existed since 1935 among the inhabitants of Venado de San Carlos, that there were caves nearby. But they were not discovered until 1945, when on a hunting trip Lael Herrera stumbled across the first two caverns.
The first serious explorations of the caves were done in by French explorer Robert Vergenes, but he only traversed the first 350 meters, leaving many mysteries and questions unresolved.
In 1969 the AEC, a United States Government organization, became interested in the caves and launched three simultaneous exploration parties.
Today, 8 caverns have been mapped totaling over 2,700 meters. Each of the caverns has sufficient headroom to permit explorers to remain standing while a few of them are 35 meters tall.

An Unforgettable Adventure

The famous ‘Papaya’ formation is in reality a staglatite and a staglamite that took 6 million years to meet.

In your trek through the caves, you will be able to observe water as it permeates the upper rock and drags with it calcium carbonate to form the staglatite while constantly dripping to the floor to shape staglamite. Both slowly but sure continue to grow and through the millennia these fragile white structure meet to form astonishing columns.

One of Costa Rica’s most marvelous natural wonders

cavernas de venado

The main entrance is located just 2 kilometers from the center of the town of Venado in San Carlos. The grottos begin at the foot of calcareous hills with small streams that produce erosion.
Over the years the effects of erosion have formed impressive galleries, beautifully decorated with staglatites and staglamites; sea shell fossils and crystallized rock amid calcareous salts, chimneys, caverns and sheets of water
